the off-season, Richie teaches traditional Okinawan/Japanese Martial Arts at
the House of the Samurai in Londonderry, NH, a school he founded in 1974. He
is a 9th Degree, Chief Grand Master Instructor Grade Black Belt certified by
the Japanese Ministry of Education. In 1994, he was inducted into the World

Registered Maine Master
Guide. To join the ranks of the legendary Registered Maine Guides,
Mr. Bernard had to pass ten written tests and three lengthy oral boards
(reputedly one of the most demanding guide testing processes in the United
States). The tests included Safety, Map and Compass, Hunting, Recreation,
Firearms, Animal Observation, Fishing, Watercraft Rules and Regulations,
Canoeing, and Trapping. His final grade of 93.7% is one of the highest
